What

The red "Couldn't play this track." line in the desktop/web player bar is now clickable. It opens a Playback error popover above the track with the failure's details and a Copy details button that copies them as plain text:

Error: Couldn't play this track.
Track: The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter Never Learned to Swim — Halden Marsh
Track ID: t-al-weather-4
Source: /api/tracks/t-al-weather-4/stream
Player: MEDIA_ERR_SRC_NOT_SUPPORTED: MEDIA_ELEMENT_ERROR: Format error
Server: HTTP 410 · file missing on disk
Time: 2026-10-29T14:21:27.434Z

In the mini player, where a popover has no room, the line opens the side panel instead (a new error panel next to devices/lyrics/queue). The popover and the panel close when the failure clears (playing again, another track), and the popover toggles from the line, closes on Escape and on outside clicks.

How

  • Core (core/src/player): PlaybackError gains details (at, source, player, server). AudioAdapter gains an optional errorDetail(). On an error the core records what the adapter said, then asks the server for the stream again, now for every streamed track (library files included, so a missing file reads HTTP 410 · file missing on disk). Only TIDAL's short 502/503 reason still replaces the bar's message, as before. playbackErrorLines / playbackErrorText lay the details out for display and copying. The source drops the server's origin, so a pasted report doesn't leak the host.
  • Web adapter: records the element's MediaError (code name + Chromium's message) or the hls.js error it gave up on (details + error.message), never a URL, since a segment URL carries TIDAL's signed address.
  • UI: NowPlaying renders the error as a button (own ellipsis; underline on hover/open). New PlaybackErrorPopover.tsx (popover + shared PlaybackErrorDetails body). useMiniPlayerMode gets an error panel and an idempotent closePanel.

Mobile shares the core, so it also probes library streams on failure now, but its UI is unchanged (it still shows only the message).

Behaviour change: the probe goes through rawFetch with its default 401 handling, as the TIDAL probe always did. So a library stream that fails with 401 (an expired session) now signs the user out, as any other API call would, where before only a TIDAL failure could. Kept deliberately: the session is gone either way.

What the audio player said is kept to one line of at most 300 characters, with any scheme://… address replaced by <address> (hls.js quotes a failed key's URI).

Verified

  • core: tsc, eslint, vitest (662 passed). New tests: details for each probe answer, downloaded copy (not asked), adapter detail kept, origin stripped, "Asking…" while pending; playbackErrorLines order and fallbacks.
  • frontend: tsc -b, eslint, vitest (388 passed), Electron tsc, vite build. New tests: adapter errorDetail() for a native MediaError and an hls.js fatal error (URL not included); clicking the line opens the dialog and Copy writes the exact text; mini mode toggles the panel instead.
  • lint:ui: full suite 246 passed, including a new playback error details overlay spec (one scoped exception: axe can't measure the wrapped track line over the sidebar and track list).
  • Screenshots with the mocked API (410 on a track's stream), light/dark, normal window and mini player (Electron bridge stubbed): popover toggles, Escape closes it, Next closes it, and the mini panel shuts when the next track starts.
  • Not run: mobile typecheck in the main checkout (its vendored core copy is stale and fails on main too).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Playback errors now include a details view with the error message, track, playback source, player information, and timestamp.
    • Open error details from the player or mini-player, and copy the formatted information to share or save.
    • When available, details include the server’s response to a stream request and additional audio playback error information.

githubesson and others added 2 commits October 29, 2026 14:27
A playback error was only a short message ("Couldn't play this track."),
so there was nothing to go on when a track wouldn't play. It now carries
what happened: when, the source the player was given (a server path
without its origin, or a downloaded copy's URI), what the audio player
said (the adapter's new optional errorDetail()), and what the server
answered when asked for the stream again.

The stream is now asked again for every streamed track, library files
included, so a missing file shows as "HTTP 410 · file missing on disk".
Only TIDAL's 502/503 reason still replaces the message on the bar.
playbackErrorLines/playbackErrorText lay the details out for display
and for copying into a bug report.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The red error line in the player bar is now a button. It opens a popover
above the track listing the failure's details (error, track, source, what
the player and the server said, time) with a Copy details button. In the
mini player, where a popover has no room, it opens the side panel
instead, like the queue and lyrics. The details close when the failure
clears: playing again or another track.

The HTML audio adapter records what failed for errorDetail(): the
element's MediaError (code name and Chromium's message) or the hls.js
error it gave up on, never a segment URL, which carries TIDAL's signed
address.

Walkthrough

Playback failures now include timestamp, source, adapter, and stream-response details. The frontend displays these details in a playback-error popover or mini-player panel and can copy them as formatted text.

Changes: Playback Error Diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture adapter error details
core/src/player/audio-adapter.ts, frontend/src/adapters/html-audio-adapter.ts, frontend/tests/html-audio-adapter.test.tsx

Move focus into the error dialog when it opens.

Add a test that renders the mini player's error panel.

The new test checks only that NowPlaying calls onToggle. No test renders MiniPlayerPanel, so its error branch can lose PlaybackErrorDetails without a failing test. Render MiniPlayerPanel with panel="error", then assert the error details and the copy action inside the mini-player-panel region. Rename the new test to match what it checks. Its current title, "opens the mini player's panel instead of a popover," describes a callback-only check.

Click the playback-error button with a pointer in this test.

Lines 145-146 activate the error button with dispatchEvent("click"). Playwright documents that dispatchEvent performs no actionability checks, so it does not test whether the button receives pointer events. The event reaches the button even when another element covers it, so this test can pass while a real user cannot open the error popover. No other test in frontend/tests or core/tests clicks this button with a pointer, and checkUI does not hit-test.

Using click() on line 146 makes Playwright wait until the button is visible, stable, and receives pointer events. If another element covers the button, the step times out and the test fails. If the button is reachable, the click opens the dialog and the existing assertions still apply. Line 145 can stay as written.

Suggested change
   await page.locator(".track-title").and(page.getByTitle(menuTrack.title, { exact: true })).dispatchEvent("click");

Comment thread core/src/player/use-player-core.ts Resolved
githubesson and others added 6 commits October 29, 2026 14:39
- What the audio player said is kept to one line of at most 300
characters, with any address replaced (hls.js quotes a failed key's
  URI, which may be signed).
- The details keep the failed track while they close over the next one,
so the Track line no longer drops out mid-fade.
- The mini player's error panel shuts from NowPlaying, beside the
popover's own close, through a close() on the panel toggle. Tests
cover both closing when the failure clears, not reopening for the
next one, and Escape / outside-click dismissal.
- The lint:ui exception names the Track line by data-label rather than
  its position.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- The server's answer gets the same treatment as the player's: one
line, capped, addresses replaced (a proxy's error page may name its
  upstream).
- A library file is probed for its first byte (Range: bytes=0-0), so a
stream that works now answers 206 without starting a whole download.
A TIDAL stream is still asked exactly as the player asks it, since the
backend passes the request on to TIDAL.
- A closing popover keeps the failure it opened for, even if the next
  track fails during the fade.
- Closing the popover with its button sends focus back to the error
  line rather than dropping it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Escape sends focus back to the error line too, when focus was inside
the popover, as its close button already did. An outside close leaves
  focus where it went.
- The probe's success answer goes through the same one-line, capped,
address-free cleanup as its error answers.
- A downloaded copy's source names only its file ("Downloaded copy ·
x.flac"), not the device's container path.
- Tests for the panel toggle's close() (only its own panel, idempotent)
and the mini player's error panel.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- The mini player's error panel keeps the failure it showed while it
morphs away, as the popover does while it fades.
- The popover's focus comment says what happens on a click elsewhere.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- The details freeze only once they've shown a failure: a mini panel
whose open morph lands after another panel was asked for no longer
  opens on an empty body.
- describeHlsError's comment says where a quoted address goes (core
replaces it), rather than that there is none.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- A failure describes the source the adapter was actually given (loaded
or activated), not what the track resolves to now: a download removed
while its file plays no longer reads as a failed stream and sends a
  probe.
- The popover takes focus as it opens; portaled to the end of the page,
it was otherwise the last thing Tab reached. Closing from inside still
sends focus back to the error line.
- The popover's height is capped to the room above the bar; in a short
window the details scroll under the heading.
- The lint:ui spec opens it with a real click, so the line must take the
pointer; a test title says what it checks.

CodeRabbit review follow-ups, addressed in 3318f32:

  • Move focus into the error dialog when it opens: done. The popover is tabIndex={-1} and takes focus once visible; closing from inside (×, Escape) sends focus back to the error line. Tests: "moves focus into the details as they open", "sends focus back to the error line when closed with Escape / its button".
  • Cap the popover height: done. maxHeight is the room above the bar; the heading stays and the details scroll (checked in a 380px-tall window).
  • Render the mini player's error panel in a test: added in bf9e373 ("shows the details in the mini player's error panel"), plus closing/frozen cases; the callback-only test is renamed to "asks the mini player for its error panel instead of opening a popover".
  • Real pointer click in the lint:ui spec: done, the error line is opened with click().

githubesson and others added 2 commits October 29, 2026 15:34
- The popover focuses its Copy details button as it opens, rather than
itself. On the container, Space reached the player's play/pause key,
which retried the failed track and dropped focus; on the button Space
and Enter copy, and keyboard users see where focus is.
- Clicking the error line to close the popover takes focus to the line
itself, for browsers that don't focus a clicked button (Safari), so it
isn't left inside the closing popover.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Focus now lands on Copy details, past the lines, so a screen reader
announced only the dialog's name and the button. The dialog points at
the lines with aria-describedby, so they're read as focus enters.

Move focus to the error panel's Copy details action when the mini panel opens.

In mini-player mode, the error button opens the error panel through errorPanel.onToggle, but focus stays on the button. The panel renders last in the player DOM, after the transport and utility controls. Keyboard users must Tab past those controls to reach it. The popover path avoids this by focusing its copy button on open.

Recompute the error popover position on window resize.

frontend/src/components/player/PlaybackErrorPopover.tsx:123-125
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the requested failure during the opening transition.

If a retry or next-track action clears the error while useMiniPlayerMode is awaiting the open morph, NowPlaying requests the panel to close. The morph callback can still set panel to "error". PlaybackErrorDetails then mounts with playbackError === null, renders an empty panel, and immediately begins closing.

Retain the requested failure for this transition, or abandon the open transition while also completing the already-started panel-window close. Skipping only the open morph leaves the window expanded.

Redact addresses from the TIDAL reason before using it as the error message.

probeStream accepts a readable TIDAL 502 or 503 body as reason without applying detailLine. The failure path then uses reason as the displayed and copied message. A URL-like value can therefore bypass the existing redaction. The issue is pre-existing, but the sanitization correction remains valid.

Suggested fix
-      reason: readable && (error.status === 502 || error.status === 503) ? readable : null,
+      reason: readable && (error.status === 502 || error.status === 503) ? detailLine(readable) : null,

Add a TIDAL 502 test whose body contains https://…?sig=…. Assert that playbackError.message contains <address> and does not contain sig=.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 483569f14992); the change keeps it reachable.

verifying a body containing a signed URL yields a playbackError.message with the

Exercise close in mini-player mode.

The test remains in normal mode because it never calls toggleMiniPlayerMode(). Update the platform mock to return miniPlayer: on, enable mini mode, then run the existing close assertion. This covers the real mini-player error-panel close path without implying that the current close implementation is defective.

- The loaded source describes a failure only when it is the reported
track's: between a track change and its commit, the next track's may
be loaded already, so the reported one is resolved again.
- The server stops being asked once the failure is gone (retry, another
track, unmount): the probe is aborted, and an aborted one reports
  nothing.
- TIDAL's reason gets the same address scrubbing before it's shown.
- In the mini player the error line opens a region, so it no longer
  says it opens a dialog.
- A window resize places the popover again.
- The panel toggle's close() is tested with mini mode on.

CodeRabbit's second review, follow-ups (86cb68a):

  • Redact addresses from the TIDAL reason: fixed. The reason goes through detailLine too. Test: "keeps no address from TIDAL's reason either".
  • Recompute the popover position on resize: fixed. A resize listener, active while it's open, re-renders it. Test: "places the details again when the window is resized".
  • Exercise close in mini-player mode: the hook test now turns mini mode on first.
  • Move focus into the mini player's error panel: not changed, on purpose. The mini player's other panels (queue, devices, lyrics) don't move focus either, and the panel follows the bar's controls in tab order. The popover moves focus because it's portaled to the end of the page, where Tab would reach it last.
  • Keep the requested failure during the opening transition: not changed. It takes a retry or skip within the ~0.4 s the window grows, and the panel then closes at once. Showing a failure that has already cleared wouldn't be more correct than the empty body. Our second reviewer reached the same view.
